The Advanced Open Water Diver Course is designed for divers who have already completed the Open Water Diver Course and want to continue their education. With this course divers will get more experience and confidence underwater. But it will also introduce divers to new diving activities. Through different adventure dives divers will expand their scuba diving skills.
Who can subscribe to the Advanced Open Water Diver Course?
Any participant must be 12 years or older and in the possession of the Open Water Diver certificate.
What will you learn?
The Advanced Open Water Diver Course is consisting of a Knowledge Development session and a practical session.
During the Knowledge Development, you will get as a diver, more insight in dive planning, emergency procedures, safety protocols and how to use efficiently different diving equipment.
During the practical session, you will make 5 dives. Two of them are mandatory, a deep dive and underwater navigation. The other 3 dives are elective and you can choose them together with your instructor in accordance with your interests and environments you would like to dive in. There is a wide range of specialty courses you can choose to include in your Advanced Open Water Diver Course.
This course will teach you how to dive deeper and let you discover different types of underwater environments.
The Advanced Open Water Diver Course is a great way to take your diving skills to the next level. After completion of the course and getting certified, you will be allowed to dive with a buddy till a depth of maximum 30 meters.
If after your Open Water Diver Course you already adventure yourself in taking some specialty courses to learn new skills of to improve some of them, we advise you to check with your instructor if it can count as an adventure dive towards your Advanced Open Water Diver Course. In that case you may have less dives to accomplish in order to get your certificate. It is also preferable to discuss with your instructor, according to the adventure dives you want to insert in the course, if additional diving gear is required.

You’ll plan your learning path with your instructor by choosing from a long list of Adventure Dives. There are two required dives – Deep and Underwater Navigation – and you choose the other three, for a total of five dives.
During the Deep Adventure Dive, you learn how to plan dives to deal with the physiological effects and challenges of deeper scuba diving. The Underwater Navigation Adventure Dive refines your compass navigation skills and helps you better navigate using kick-cycles, visual landmarks and time.
The other knowledge and skills you get vary with your interest and the adventures you have – photography, buoyancy control, fish identification, exploring wrecks and many more.
You may be able to get college credit for the Advanced Open Water Diver course.
Beyond using basic scuba equipment, you’ll need a compass and dive knife or dive tool. You’ll also use specialized gear depending on the Adventure Dives you choose. For example, you’d obviously use a dry suitfor the Dry Suit Adventure Dive or a sidemount configuration during the Sidemount Adventure Dive. Your PADI Instructor will explain the equipment that you need and may suggest additional gear, such as dive light for night diving or lift bag for search and recovery diving.
